Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels of San Antonio is only as successful as the number of volunteers committed to help end senior hunger in our community. Therefore, we have created a short list of the different ways you can help our program. If you don't see anything that fits your interest, please contact our Volunteer Department so that we can find a volunteer opportunity that best suits your needs. Thanks for your support!  To learn about volunteer opportunities during our major events, please visit our News and Events section of our website

Regular Volunteer and Seasonal Volunteer

Volunteer - General

Meal Delivery Volunteer
The most convenient and impactful way to help our program is by becoming a Meal Delivery Volunteer. This volunteer opportunity only requires ONE HOUR of your day to help feed a senior neighbor in your community. Each meal delivery volunteer must participate in a driver orientation program, be physically able to lift a small meal carrier, and provide their own transportation. Upon completion of orientation, each volunteer is assigned to a specific route where they are responsible to pick up meals from a designated meal pick-up site near their employ or neighborhood. Meals need to be delivered between 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM to meet certain health compliance requirements (no exceptions). To accommodate our volunteers, each volunteer creates their own schedule to ensure their meals are delivered within the designated timeframe. You may choose to deliver once a week or as often as your schedule allows.

Kitchen Volunteer
Assist with meal packaging, prep work, dishwashing and cleaning.

Route Coordinator
Oversee the daily activities of each route. Coordinators will troubleshoot any route vacancies, no shows and help with mapping new routes.

Clerical or Office Volunteer
Clerical and general office duties include filing, data entry, collating, bulk mailings, and phone assistance.

Volunteer - Church, Corporate, or Group

We believe the human connection between volunteers and older adults is a nourishing as the food we provide; therefore, we have created an easy opportunity to become a Meals on Wheels partner!

Proposal

Meals on Wheels offers a simple, yet impactful opportunity to engage your team in community service. Whether you are a church, corporation, or community organization, you can sign up to be a Meals on Wheels partner by simply housing a small food warmer, organizing a group of volunteers, and delivering meals to a nearby neighborhood.

Logistics

Delivering meals with a partner is both exciting and more practical; therefore, we recommend identifying at least 20 volunteers in your organization to participate in the program.  Each volunteer will form two-person teams who will then deliver twice a month.  In addition, we request that you identify someone in your organization who will serve as the liaison with Meals on Wheels.  Once the partnership is solidified, Meals on Wheels moves quickly to map a nearby route, secure a location for a food warmer, provide a one hour orientation to volunteers at your location, and help organize the delivery schedule.

Commitment

All that is required to becoming a partner of the Meals on Wheels program is a commitment to help feed hungry seniors during your lunch hour and compassion for our elderly population.  Your corporate involvement will foster ties to your company as a compassionate place of employment.  Please call Volunteer Services today at 210-735-5115 for more information.
