Peaches are in our groceries stores presently. Many states take the claim for peaches, i.e. Georgia peaches, Texas Hill Country peaches, etc. China is the largest producer of peaches with Italy being second. California produces 50% of the peaches grown in the United States.
The peach originated in China. It goes back to the 10th century B.C. In China, the peach tree is considered the tree of life and the peach is the symbol of immortality. Peaches traveled the “silk road” to Persia (present day Iran). It was discovered by Alexander the Great and named by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus who thought it came from Persia and named the peach after it. The Romans imported peaches from Persia and transported them to their European settlements. Christopher Columbus brought peach trees to the Americas on his second and third voyage. The French introduced peaches to Louisiana and the English introduced them to its colonies.
There are clingstone (flesh clings to stone) and freestone (flesh can twist from stone) varieties. The flesh varies in color from white to yellow and certain types have red stains. The skin can vary from green to dark-red. .
Peaches are low in calories; a medium size one has approximately 40 calories. It is a good source of Vitamin A. It also contains some potassium and vitamin C.
